Midway through the journey of our life, I came upon last week’s cover story in TIME magazine. The headline read, "What If There’s No Hell?"
In 2011, I find the question laughable. Of course I do not believe there is a demon’s playground resting somewhere just beneath our feet where a goat-looking man inflicts unspeakable pain on the wretched for eternity.
But when I was 13 I read "Dante’s Inferno." At that age, the notion of Hades, and the comforting cosmic justice there implied, made for great literature, but so did "Harry Potter." And I did not go running around warning everyone not to stumble onto Platform 9 & 3/4.
However, not everybody believes as I do, so this week I asked The Oswegonian’s writers to enter their opinion.
But here are my two cents: It is gravity and centripetal motion, not God’s love or wrath, which moves the sun and the other stars.
