Lori Moreth – 4/30/10

As the school year is coming to an end, some of us will be returning in the fall, while many of us will be graduating and entering into the real world. Reflecting back, one could say that this has been an interesting year, to say the least, especially on the political front. What can we look forward to?

When I gaze into my crystal ball, I see tough times ahead. There seems to be a growing divide in this country being fueled by the Obama administration. Arizona, after asking the federal government for help to stop the violence that has been spilling over into their state for many years now, has taken matters into their own hands. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed into law a comprehensive immigration reform bill, making it a crime to be in the US illegally. President Obama, as his usual "classy" self, condemned this legislation and ordered his justice department to look into the law, stating that the law would "undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans." How is enforcing a law that is already on the books, unfair and for whom?

In a recent raid on Pro’s Ranch Market stores, 300 workers were found to be in the U.S. illegally and were fired. As soon as the news got out, people showed up in droves to apply for the newly vacated jobs. Immigration and Customs Enforcement stated that one of its goals is to reduce demand for illegal employment and protect job opportunities for the nation’s lawful workforce.

Vandalism in the form of a refried bean swastika was found on the door of the capital. Those who are in favor of the law, 70 percent of American citizens polled, are being chastised as rednecks and racists.

ACORN has once again entered into the news. Recently, a video tape was released featuring Bertha Lewis, CEO of ACORN, giving a speech to a group of 150 student activists.

"Any group that says, ‘I’m young, I’m Democratic and I’m a socialist,’ is all right with me. You know that’s no light thing to do — to actually say, I’m a socialist — because you guys know right now we are living in a time which is going to dwarf the McCarthy era. It is going to dwarf the internment during World War II. We are right now in a time that is going to dwarf the era of Jim Crow and segregation," Lewis said. She went on to name those who are a threat: "This so-called Tea Party movement? More like a bowel movement in my estimation." She urged the members to get as active as they possibly could to "build this institution." What institution, the "fundamental transformation" of our country?

I predict that we will see a snowballing of new laws being implemented by executive order, which will give rise to a more intrusive government "nanny state" control. We will soon see our food choices limited under the disguise of making our nation healthier. Prices will steadily rise. New taxes will be placed on all of us regardless of socioeconomic status. These taxes will be hidden within the price, known as the value added tax, or VAT. That is a tax that is added at every level of the process of making goods, from the raw material to the finished product’s delivery.

I predict that because of the oil rig explosion and the mass amounts of oil that were released into the ocean, the bill that would allow exploration of oil drilling off our coasts will be swept under the rug never to surface again.

I do, however, see a bright side; we are still a center-right country. The Obama administration continues in its arrogance to blatantly show its true colors like James Jones, the president’s top foreign policy aide who told an off-colored Jewish joke in a speech.

It won’t be long before the American people realize what is at stake. It will unite us, and, together in the midterm and 2012 elections, we will take back our country.
