Hockey season winding down

Before the 2009-10 season began, the Oswego State men’s hockey team had not defeated SUNY Plattsburgh since 2006 and had never done so in the Campus Center Ice Arena. Fast-forward to Jan. 30, 2010 and both streaks have been snapped as the Lakers completed the season sweep of the Cardinals with a 3-2 victory in front of a sold-out crowd, all dressed in white.

Focus factor. The over-arching theme of "White-out Weekend" seemed to revolve around whether or not the Lakers would overlook last Friday’s contest against SUNY Potsdam with the Plattsburgh game looming the next night. As they have done all season, the Lakers proved their critics wrong once again, coming up with a 5-1 victory over the Bears and proving that taking it one game at a time has been their philosophy all season long.

Pipe dreams. Coach Gosek simply cannot go wrong with the goaltending situation. Both Paul Beckwith (wins over Buffalo State and Potsdam) and Kyle Gunn-Taylor (wins over Fredonia and Plattsburgh) have posted goals against averages under 1.80 while neither of them have lost a game since the first weekend of the season. Gunn-Taylor remains undefeated.

Conference conclusion. The Lakers will play the remainder of their schedule in the SUNYAC with SUNY Cortland coming in Friday night for Senior Night, rounding out the regular season home schedule. The Lakers round out the season on the road with stops in Morrisville on Feb. 13, and SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo on Feb. 19 and 20, respectively. The Lakers need only three points to clinch the number one seed in the SUNYAC.
