“Goalie Jamie Scharfe lands Athlete of the Week after performance against Cortland”

This week, Jamie Scharfe has been chosen as the Athlete of the Week.

Jamie is on Oswego State’s field hockey team and has been picked because of her great talent as a goalie.

She didn’t start her career out as a goalie, though, and never really planned to go down this path. She started playing field hockey in high school and played as a forward. Then she came to Oswego State with the same intentions, but with a turn of events for her and the team’s original goalie, Scharfe ended up taking the role as the team’s goalie.

Right off the bat with the team’s first game of the year against SUNY Morrisville, Scharfe came out swinging with a split save and picked up a shutout in the team’s second win of the year.

Even with all of her success as a goalie, Scharfe feels that her biggest achievement is just learning to play goalie. But she won’t give herself all the credit for that, because she says that she could have never done it without all of the help and support that she received from her teammates and coaches from the beginning. Her future goal is keeping that amount of trust she has with her coaches and teammates, along with achieving the All-SUNYAC that she came so close to getting before.

Scharfe has started every game for the Lakers this year, and recently had her first shutout of the season against Brockport at home. She has totaled 41 saves on the year, giving her a .732 save percentage for the year.

Scharfe’s next test will come on Saturday, Sept. 26 in a home game against Kean University.
