Oswego State raises funds for injured Moreno and family

"

nursing career in April, but since last year her life has been put on hold because of this event.

"

"I wish he were more severely punished, I don’t like the fact that he might get away with third degree misdemeanor assault," she added. "I am very upset about this and wish someone would change the law that allows this to happen. Because of a fight, my son gets to not be able to walk, he has partial memory loss, he gets to go through rehabilitation for two years while this man gets away with barely one year in jail."

"

The college community at Oswego State has been incredibly supportive of her son, Mercedes said.

"

"Many students, staff members of Oswego and teachers visited him at the University Hospital."

"

Many have actually gone to see him in his home in the Bronx. Last year, the Oswego State men’s basketball team also was there for the family, raising money at their games, Mercedes said. Angel had just started helping as a student manager for the team when he was hurt. She also wishes to express her gratitude to all the staff members of Oswego State and the students who have been supportive and have tried to help her in any way.

"

The Student Association, in partnership with Auxiliary Services, has created an upcoming "Miss-a-Meal day." Starting on April 27 in every dining hall, signs will be posted to sign up for the miss-a-meal night on April 30. All the proceeds from the event will go to the Moreno family.

"

"For every meal missed, Auxiliary Services will make a donation that equals the amount of the meal to the family of Angel Moreno. This miss-a-meal program has been around in Oswego State since the 1970’s and we are glad to be of help in any way we can," Dining Services Director Craig Traub explained.

"

Angel still cannot accomplish simple tasks, but his mom feels optimistic that in 24 months he should be back to great health again. For now, Mercedes prays regularly that her son will be himself again.

"

"As a Catholic, I pray to God all the time that things will be better; I hope that Angel will one day have a normal life." she said.
